As an event videographer, I pride myself on delivering high-quality work to my clients. They provide me with incredible opportunities, like the recent chance to film at the stunning NSW Parliament House. However, every venue has its quirks, and this particular location presented a significant challenge: light flicker.

Understanding Light Flicker in Event Videography
While our eyes might not perceive it, lights flicker at rates faster than we can see. Unfortunately, cameras can catch this flicker and event videographers need to solve this issue. In this magnificent room, the lighting was problematic. There were 4 different light sources in the room all flickering at a different rates, and I could only adjust my camera to counteract one flicker at a time. With multiple lights flickering at various intervals, I faced an uphill battle.
How to Remove Light Flicker in Event Videography
Flickering lights in your event videography are unacceptable and fall short of professional standards. When encountering this issue, it's important to adjust your camera’s frame rate and settings to minimise the flicker, though this isn’t always feasible. And in this case it wasn’t. The footage did not reflect my professionalism. Fortunately, I had invested in advanced software capable of digitally removing flicker from video. This tool allowed me to enhance the footage and present it to my client at a professional standard. It’s moments like these that remind me of the importance of being prepared for unexpected challenges in videography.
